sunday trad session

  • Kerrigan's Bar Harbour Street Mullingar, WH Ireland (map)

Join us on bank holiday Sunday for some jigs & reels at Kerrigan’s Bar

We welcome a very special guest, accordion player Seamas Hyland for his Mullingar debut. Seamas has spent the last few years on the road with folk heroes the Mary Wallopers, as well as performing with John Francis Flynn, Seamas is now focusing on his solo career and has an album in the works.

Seamas’ solo performance will be followed by a good old fashioned trad seisiún to round out our bank holiday Sunday. Bígí linn!

  • Seamas Hyland is an accordion player, set dancer and traditional singer from Co. Waterford, now living in Dublin.

Having toured extensively and recorded with folk band the Mary Wallopers, he is now focusing on his own solo career. As a solo artist, Hyland’s music is deeply rooted in tradition.

The music and set dancing of West Waterford has had a huge influence on him to date, in particular the accordion playing of Bobby Gardiner.

More recently, his artistic practice has drawn inspiration from field recordings from urban and rural environments. He is the recipient of an Arts Council award to further explore these ideas, which will involve writing a new body of work inspired by urban and rural found sounds.

On top of his solo project, he enjoys working and collaborating with a variety of artists, including John Francis Flynn, Isadora Epstein, Acid Granny, Eimear Walshe & RF Chaney.

He has performed in renowned venues such as Kentish Town Forum (London), Barrowland Ballroom (Glasgow), The Bowery Ballroom (New York) and Vicar St. (Dublin) and at festivals such as Glastonbury, Electric Picnic, All Together Now, Rock Werchter (Belgium).

Hyland has recorded a solo accordion album and is currently working on releasing it over the coming months. The album features many of his own compositions and improvised pieces as well as traditional, unaccompanied solo material.
